Writing Prompts

A writing prompt can be helpful when a writer is stuck or feels like there aren’t any ideas left. Feel free to check in each week for a new prompt and do whatever you want with it: if the prompt pings something for you, go with it; if you want to adjust it or follow another thread entirely, do that. If it doesn’t do anything for you, just sit for the time that you’d set aside to follow the prompt and think. Daydream. Let your mind wander. This is actually just as valuable as writing. Sometimes more so. Sometimes, the sitting gets you closer to the writing without your ever realizing it. See if any of these ideas work for you.

Imagine your favorite song. Try to figure out why you love it so much -- beyond its lyrics and danceability -- think about why you love it. What emotion is at the heart of how you feel about that song?

Take 20 minutes and write a scene - fiction or not - around the emotion at the heart of your love for that song.

Now, think about how that emotion feels in your body - is it a weight? Pain? Does it smash your bones? Constrict your skull? Does it feel like flying? Like hurling yourself into the abyss? Like levitation? Like floating?

Spend 5 minutes writing it out - if it helps, start by saying ‘this is how it feels in my body when I’m hit by this emotion.’

Then take as long as you need to inject the scene with actual physical aspects of the emotion.
